How to Replace an audi key blade G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two connector pins, and they serve different purposes but the best method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c, even if I unplug it. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, i believe that i've eliminated everything else. But i am afraid I may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. It is easy to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know both the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you are experiencing issues with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or a misfire when you are in gear. If you have any of these issues, it is most likely that your sensor is deteriorating and needs replacing. The good news is they are very affordable and easy to find particularly in the case of a Bosch sensor, like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this unit is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a variety of issues within your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your replacement audi key cost uk, as it transmits information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the car's engine is turning. If this sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission and the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU is then able to process this signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. There should be a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these points.
