How to Replace an audi car key G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the edge of transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies to trigger the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain of timing. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins and they have different functions however the best method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is plugged in, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero.
I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've all other possibilities out. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this.
