How to Replace an audi Keyless Go G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are various connector pins, and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, replace Audi Key i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know the position and speed the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shut down.

The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or a misfire when in gear. If you have any of these issues it is likely your sensor is failing and needs replacing. The good thing is that they are very cheap and easily accessible particularly if you're looking at a Bosch sensor, like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this part is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues in your car. It's an essential component of the transmission of your audi keyless go, as it transmits information to the ECU about how fast or slow the engine of the car is turning. If this sensor fails, it could affect the performance of the transmission and the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this signal to control the flow of fuel and boost and also timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should see the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these points. This is a common part that is found across the audi car key 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good parts could be found in wrecking yards.
