Item upgrades can be used to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade you choose, it can boost an item's Rarity or Mark Level, and also boost other stats.

Each item has a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a specified amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's basic stats increases when it is upgraded. The value is the sum of all the leveled up perks (attack magic attack, attack defense). Upgrades can be costly, depending on the person you hire and what you decide to do. This is due to the fact that many perks have to be replaced to allow the item to get upgraded.

The level of an item is a popular measurement of power and is visible on all item tooltips. It can also be used as a gating requirement when queueing for dungeons, scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear a player can wear (since PvP is restricted to a lower level). Players can see their average level of item on their character sheet.

When deciding whether to buy or sell gear players can evaluate the levels of the item. It's a good indicator of the quality of an Best item upgrader and the amount of damage it's capable of dealing with. The item level can also be used to evaluate items when evaluating a vendor's inventory.

On PC, you can see the level of the item by pressing ALT or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the item's full description, including ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are a variety of theories on how the level of an item is determined. One theory is that the level is a number derived from a formula that determines the value of an item's stats are worth. It is based on the fact that different perks are valued differently, and that gems found in sockets increase the value of the item. This can result in a calculated amount for the item's ilvl, which is usually quite close to Blizzard's real level of the item.

However, this isn't the only factor that affects an item level upgrade's ilvl, because the size of the area the item was dropped in could change the value of its stats, such as by adding an amount to its haste rating or crit rating. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have higher ilvl than those from lower-level instances.

Item Stats

Item stats are a big element in what makes or breaks an item for players. The game makes use of them in various ways to encourage players to not limit themselves to one weapon, and to encourage them to try out other weapons. The stats of a base weapon are boosted by the weapon's stat modifications, which are themselves boosted by the player's level.

Upgrades to the item add by boosting certain stats on the item. The upgrade costs are determined by the rarity of the item. An item that is white or grey for instance, can only be upgraded one time however, items that has rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times at higher costs.

Affixes are a different method to change an item's stats. They are stat boosts which can be added by the player to an item. The affixes can be used to provide items with extra damage, special capabilities (such as the ability to revive dead or reduce cooling downs), or to make them unique by naming them.

At present, all affixes can be changed by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button, which is accompanied by the arrows that circle. This will cost a certain amount in gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade gauges as with other rerolling methods.

In addition to rerolling affixes, players can select which of the available stats to be kept on an item after it is upgraded. The possible stat ranges for an item are based on the item level, but every item is guaranteed to have at least one stat within the range, unless it is an exclusive item or the result of a God roll from a raid boss.

Another thing that could change is the option to upgrade equipment without having to reroll the attachments, or pick which stats to enhance. However, as with the base equipment, this would have to be done on a per-item basis, and the interface for item comparison wouldn't show all possible stats either lost or gained at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player increases the probability of obtaining items and the properties that are created by loot and the intensity of these properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It merely gives the player a chance to upgrade items their equipment earlier in the game, and is therefore more valuable in early game runs as opposed to later ones, because most players value higher weapon scaling and defenses over raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chance of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This isn't to be confused with the Blacksmith’s overall chances of upgrading, which increase with each item level. They can also be increased with the use of anti-materials like a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons come with the default Luck value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the type of material used) to give +40 Luck or to increase the existing Luck of an item up to 140.

Certain items, like the weapon that is infused with hollow, can also be equipped to increase the damage of any ability that is able to deal damage by five percent. These items are available at the store, or they can be constructed using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades work. However, there are cash shop items that allow players to increase their success rate or prevent themselves from losing an item in the event that the upgrade is unsuccessful.

The success rate of an upgrade is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage indicates the probability of successfully upgrading the item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special Materials. The chance of success can only be increased so much, and the chance that an upgrade will fail can't be greater than 100%..

The success of an upgrades is also influenced by the luck of that item. All items have an average success rate of 25% and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by five percent.

Note that upgrades to items are rendered above the items in the inventory, so enchantment glint and other effects may be obstructed by them.
