Origins
Toto's early history, which began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's economic growth. In the first half, Toto produced goods to meet the demand for modern, contemporary urban housing. To do this, it employed the first tunnel kiln in the nation to produce ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered automation for production control, which allows for greater efficiency and consistency.
The company began expanding internationally in the late 1980s to take advantage of new markets and sales opportunities. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and selling other products of manufacturers to complement its own line of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy increased sales and expanded the market share of the company globally.
By the 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis on research and development for household appliances that use water. It also improved its distribution system to better meet the needs of customers and to increase profits. The company adopted a just-in-time method of managing supply chains and used the same methodology in its sales strategy. This resulted in a greater level customer satisfaction.
Toto continues to invent with regard to toilet technology. The latest toilet, for example is equipped with a strong tornado flush that is more eco friendly than conventional toilets. Toto uses recycled water in its manufacturing process and also has a green purchasing policy. Apart from toilets, Toto produces bathtubs and faucets and hand dryers that are more efficient in terms of energy consumption than typical models.
The first museum of the company was opened in 2015 It has exhibits on Toto's seminal products and their evolution and its group companies (all that deal with ceramics), historical background of plumbing and products such as bath units and, in a different gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum houses a bathroom with a WASHLET and other toilet innovations.
Before beginning the formation of Toto members of the group did session work for various musicians. Boz Scaggs album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich and guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather and drummer Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also performed on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.

The album begins hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write great AOR tunes that slowly get into your head. The album also features slow, jazzier tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. And the album ends with Great Expectations, a song that mixes folk with distortion AOR and should sound totally wrong, but works wonderfully well.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes changed for the worse. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career and the band had a variety of drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the aftermath of drug-related charges. However, the group continued to perform as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Despite the chaos, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation that was not as successful as IV. The band managed to release a chart-topping album, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia were in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be revived. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was busy with Yes at the time) was eventually referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin.
