Upgrades increase the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades also increase bonuses such as Crit chance and damage from PvE.

For instance, a weapon with the upgrade template ending in % will gain an attack damage of 3% each time it is upgraded (relative to its previous value).

Item upgrading costs crests and the item's current level. The cost rises with item's level.

Components

Upgrade components can be incorporated into weapons, armor and trinkets to give them a stat boost or add a bonus effect. They can be acquired through crafting, purchasing from vendors trading or looting. Some upgrades also have special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be placed in equipment with a slot for them; the item upgrader kit must have been at a minimum upgraded to blue level to allow a component to be inserted. Upgrade components, unlike other mods can only be applied once. They cannot be replaced or applied several times. Infusions and enrichments are a type of upgrade component used to upgrade non-amulet legendary or ascending equipment, as other items that are not ascended. Infusions and enrichments are recovered by salvaging gear from the ascended, or by completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix may be added to an upgrade, changing the name of the item it's applied to (for example, 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' becomes Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Some upgrades increase the Mark Rarity or Level of an item, allowing players to create stronger versions using the smallest amount of Upgrade crystals than they would require to reach the same level using standard methods.

A 'boost upgrade' can alter the defense or attack properties of a weapon, or armor. These upgrades are available to be crafted from the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene and defeats the Crazed Mechanic. These upgrades are available for purchase them in the cash shop or by obtaining them from enemies when upgrading other equipment.

Each upgrade increases the likelihood that a higher tier version of an item will be revealed during the next reset. This gives players a reason to upgrade their equipment even if they are unsure what can be improved upon an update.

The process of upgrading an item can be expensive and it is likely that the item upgrader kit will become obsolete, or even break, if the upgrade is unsuccessful. Upgrade Crystals and assist powders are also destroyed when the upgrade fails. Cash shop items can be used to decrease or eliminate the risk of failure. Certain upgrades also provide the player a bonus if they are reinserted.

Glyphs

Glyphs can be used to enhance the Paragon Board by placing them in sockets with special functions. Glyphs buff the effectiveness of all nodes in their radius and include pre-existing affixes to equipment. Glyphs can be upgraded in numerous ways. We recommend upgrading them as quickly as you can to level 15.

You'll often see in the final game that placing Glyphs is the most effective way to upgrade your gear. They are the only upgrade components which can be upgraded to level 15 and offer a significant boost to your power on the Paragon Board.

The majority of upgrades in the game can be replaced, however Glyphs are the one upgrade component that can be removed and re-placed without any restrictions. The only exception is legendary equipment that requires an Black Lion Salvage Kit to salvage and replace.

Each Glyph has a certain range of values can enhance a stat by. The value is shown when you choose the Glyph in your inventory. You can choose to replace it with another Glyph with the same rank, or a higher rank, which will boost the overall value of the Glyph.

There are Glyphs in the Black Lion Trading Post, as part of a Gem Store purchase or bundle with certain tools for gathering unlimited use and also through Faction Crypt raids. Every Faction Crypt could drop one of these Glyphs. There are also some rare glyphs which you can find in any of the Faction Crypts.

When you have the desired Glyphs then you have to put them on your equipment. Each Glyph unlocks a unique bonus that will boost the stats of a specific set of nodes in a radius surrounding the Glyph. This will either be +40 for one of your primary stats or +25 for two of your secondary stats, based on the Glyph.

Glyphs boost all nodes that are connected to them, therefore it is best to put Glyphs in the most important spots on the Graph. This will increase the impact. For instance that a Druid should aim to place their Glyphs near their primary damage points, but also be sure to place them near the most critical damage nodes too.

Leveling

The item upgrading system lets players increase the stats of certain items by placing upgraded components in them. This is commonly known as "upping". Each upgradeable item upgrader comes with a level that determines its upgraded stats. Upgraded items can be upgraded up to a maximum of 385. Each level of an item requires a different amount of components to be reached and the costs for upgrading increase as the item level upgrade gets advanced in level.

Some upgrades require a special ingredient to activate. This ingredient can be obtained by completing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be purchased from NPCs or found on the upgrade tab in crafting tables. Each completed Upgrade Recipe earns some Technology Points. These points can be used for leveling up an item. Once enough points are earned, you will be able to claim your upgrade and get its extra bonuses.

When a player upgrades an item it is replaced with a different item of the same kind. This means that the same piece of armor will be transformed into an weapon or shield once upgraded. The new item will also have its own set bonus. This could be a drawback, as the item can increase in price even if you do not require it.

The upgrades to items can be rerolled if the player has enough reroll tokens in order to do so. The item will be replaced by an entirely new item that has a level 1 basis and totally different bonuses. This can be useful but it shouldn't be done often as it can waste resources.

Some upgrades can be rerolled several times which increases their value and allows the player to modify their equipment. Dolphin's Gift is a good example, as it gives buffs when the player is repeatedly in or exits the water. This can be upgraded several times, each time increasing the max roll by a factor of 10. This item can be very valuable in PvP, as an item that is properly rolled it could be worth between 20 and 50x its value without being upgraded.

Requirements

Item upgrading allows players to boost the level of their available equipment - weapons, armor, and trinkets that are above ilvl 385 by offering the appropriate currency and items to an NPC that upgrades items. Upgrades to armor set pieces also boost the defense of the base set and weapon upgrades items boost their base damage as well as their strength and dexterity.

All items are upgradeable up to five times, except for hero gear, which can be upgraded eight times. Every each time you upgrade an item it is given the chance to fail. The failure rate increases the more you go beyond the maximum amount of upgrades. Failures will result in the item reverting to its original condition which means that the player has to spend additional materials than if they had stopped upgrading after the maximum number.

If an item does not upgrade the amount of experience in its growth bar is reset to zero. The item also loses any bonuses it earned, such as crit chance damage to attack, additional effects (such as a higher healing rate over time or the speed of reloading). However, the player may still continue to use the weapon or armor after the failure.

When an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied from the lowest to the highest. This means that the weapon that is upgraded increases its crit chance, the increase will be applied before any damage from attacks increases. Slots is a new attribute that was added to the definitions of items. The value is calculated each time an upgrade occurs.

The amount of resources required to upgrade an item is based on the rarity rating and the number of upgrade slots. The cost of upgrading non-premium equipment is equal to the value of the base item.
