Exposure can occur when asbestos is mined or removed from a structure or when people breathe in dust from dismantled asbestos-containing materials. The asbestos-related workers in these situations are at the highest risk of developing mesothelioma.

Exposure to asbestos outside of work can also cause peritoneal cancer. Studies have demonstrated that the risk of mesothelioma increases with each year they were exposed to asbestos. In one case-control study in Los Angeles and New York doctors compared the jobs that were listed on death certificates of those who died from mesothelioma of the peritoneal region to their interview with next-of-kin.
