The title of El Adelantado, derived from the Spanish verb "adelantar," indicating to improve or progress, initially known military leaders assigned with primary trips in to newly conquered territories. However, as political structures changed, so also did the role of the adelantado in towns like Segovia. By the late 11th and 12th centuries, that determine became an essential agent of elegant authority, acting as a liaison between the monarchy and the area populace.
